Saturday, November 6, 1999I left home at 7:30 this morning to catch the city bus to the airport. I was the only one on this bus since it's Saturday and most people don't leave till it's time to go shopping. Thank goodness for rolling suitcases! They make traveling so much easier. I changed buses before too long and had time to grab a danish at the Circle K (and begged to use their bathroom as I'd already had too much coffee). A few more people were on the second bus though it was far from crowded. This is one of the long haul schedules that ends at the airport. I got to the airport at 8:35 but my plane wasn't scheduled to leave till 11:00. The next bus would have gotten me there at 10:08 and I always get to the airport at least an hour early, if not more, so that I can get a good seat as I travel the cheapie airlines that don't reserve a seat but are first come first served. Another bus schedule would have gotten me there at 9:30 but I would have had to wait at a transit center for 50 minutes. I figured that I would rather wait at the airport. They ran a little gadget over the straps of my backpack at the security check and then checked a screen. I asked what that was for and they said they spot check for explosives. I never thought about that but backpack straps would be a good place to carry stuff. I bought breakfast and had a chance to read my magazine and watch the people. Food doesn't seem to be as expensive at airports, compared to the rest of the city, as it used to be, or maybe this is just for Tucson. I was ready and waiting for check-in and got the #2 boarding pass. Yeah! Since I had checked my bag I was ready to go. Usually I carry my bag on but I didn't feel like trying to get it in the overhead bin. When you're 5'4", as I am, it's a major effort to lift that suitcase into those overhead compartments. The plane was late, as it was late leaving San Diego, but we made up a little time on the way to LAX. We were only 15 minutes late when we landed but then we just sat there for half an hour before we taxied up to the terminal. One little boy, maybe 3 or 4, decided as we were descending that he really, really needed to use the bathroom and started crying. The stewardess finally took him to the bathroom after we had sat for about ten minutes even though she said it was against regs. Everyone on the plane felt his relief. My son was waiting and it was so good to see him. He said it was strange to see on the screen that we had landed but we just didn't appear. He said the LAX was a zoo that day and the parking was also a sit and wait affair. As we were driving out, one guy had just pulled to the side of one of the parking aisles and was waiting for whoever to come because he had gotten tired of trying to find a parking place. My daughter-in-law was at their home and it was nice seeing her also. I do so enjoy visiting my kids. We did a little running around and then went out to eat at a very nice restaurant that they had gotten a gift certificate for. It was full of what looked like high school kids all dressed up with the guys in black suits and the girls in short, tight, little black dresses. They were so cute. The food was so good and I was stuffed. This was a good start to a vaction.
