Bureaucracy is wonderful and when you add to it public education with all it's regulations you have a whole lot of fun. We had a little seminar at work today on what information we can release on students. We also covered employee privacy rights but the big one was student privacy. Basically we can't tell anyone anything, not even the students until we are sure they are who they say they are. As the gentleman giving the talk said, the best place for a criminal to hide out is on a college campus as no one will ever be able to find out they are there, not even their parents in many cases.

It was the day between the last day of classes and the first day of finals and things were a bit quiet, it's called Dead Day. Many of the students don't have finals so they are already heading out. This is always nice for staff as we can finally get into the restaurants at noon without waiting too long. Since I work in Accounts Payable we also get some strange check requests to pay as people clean out their desks.

Our fiscal year ends the end of June and we have to have everything in by the third week of July so the state can then balance by the end of the month. No one takes vacation from the end of June till the end of July. The 4th of July is just a freebie that they can't get out of. We'll start getting all kinds of things as the departments try to get everything in that they can before an account runs out.

It was in the 90s today so it felt like summer was really coming. A couple of weeks and the students will be gone, well most of them, and hot weather will be here and we can settle in for the summer. It was nice to feel the warmth after cool weather we've been having. Our cool weather is, of course, anything in the 70s. Below that it's cold. It's time to start hiking again so I can head up into the high country.

Cat is chasing her tail. She is about 12 years old but sometimes she still acts like a kitten. Her real name is Dark Cloud but I always just call her cat. She's a sweetie but not very friendly with with strangers. A couple weeks ago she brought in a bird. A live bird. Poor thing. I took it away and put the bird back in a bush. It seemed to move ok and I hope it was. She also brings in bugs to play with. Gross!
