I found a great website today. It's The Extra Miler Club which is about collecting counties. You have to actually enter the county by ground transportation. Such a great thing to collect. They don't take any room but are fun. I'll have to join.
I already collect roads. I have my roads pages where I list all the roads I've been on. I started them just to see where I've been and they just grew. They multiplied and I can't keep up with them. I do have rules. I have to actually be on the road for half a mile to a mile or so. It doesn't count if it's just at an interchange where I get off to get gas. I'd like to show them on a map but so far I haven't come up with a good format.
I'm also collecting state capitals for volkswalks. I started that because I realized how many state capitals are places I've never been. They often aren't the main city in the state. The volkswalk part is because they are so good at getting around to the good places to see.
Now I'm wondering what other things I could collect that don't take up shelf space, just a web page or so. Some people collect peaks. The Southern Arizona Hiking Club has a list of peaks and patches you can get each time you reach a certain number. People get prizes for years at work but that's not for fun. I do collect bus stations and pictures of them. I should list the bus stations I've been to but don't have pictures of because the pictures were bad or I couldn't get a picture.
The fun of collecting is that it gives you a reason to get out and about. I know that some people just collect to own things, but I find that rather boring. I would like to travel the old emigrant and exploration trails, or at least as close as I can get by bus or passenger vehicle. I don't care if it's exact, but that I go through the same area and route so I can get an idea of what the pioneers went through. I have been on part of the Oregon Trail and the Gila Trail. I'm checking on others and hope to follow them also.
Some people collect lighthouses, and others collect bridges. Some collect museums, though they may not call it collecting. Some collect places to shop and others collect golf courses. To each their own. It's just fun to get another item on your list and as long as you realize that this is just part of the fun of traveling, it can take you to some places that you would normally never go. Roads and counties could take forever. How wonderful to have something to look forward to for the rest of my life. And how wonderful to have another excuse to look at another map. What fun!
