Driving to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument

After loading everything in the car and doing a little more grocery shopping, in a scattered sort of way, we were off, heading west on AZ-86 to Why (what a great name for a town). We continued on to Ajo so I could register for the Organ Pipe volkswalk and then returned to Why.

Traffic was light till we headed south on AZ-85 and started to meet the traffic heading back home after a sunday at Rocky Point. They certainly weren't staying at Organ Pipe since there was only a few motorhomes and one other tent camper when we got there. They had the motorhomes at the front of the campgrounds and the tenters at the other end of campgrounds, looking over the desert. Even after a few other tenters arrived it was very quiet more like desert camping should be than the other times I'd been there.

After setting up our tents we walked the 2+ mile round trip to the visitor center and checked out the exhibits. It was overcast and very nice walking weather. I found out that I had forgotten to bring my insoles for my hiking boots so I walked in my tevas which wasn't too bad. It was beautiful out there. There are so many colors in just the stones.

It's so quiet at night. We couldn't see many stars because of the clouds but the quiet and emptiness is wonderful.
