I'm sitting in Children's Memorial Park at 7:20 am enjoying the early morning. There aren't any children playing, I assume because their parents don't want to bring them here this early, and there are birds everywhere. It's already getting warm but the path is very full with bikers, walkers and joggers. It takes some coordination and attention to avoid hitting anyone but everyone is doing a good job. I plan to ride a little further till it gets too warm and then head back to do some shopping.
It's 8:50 am and I'm back at the park. I went further than I planned. After La Cholla the bike path continues on the south side to the interstate, another two and one half miles. The asphalt is brand new and isn't stripped yet so this section is fairly new. There are some trailer parks but they are set back a ways. At Camino de la Tierra, which runs through, not over, the Rillito, there's a rest area with restrooms, water fountains and tables. Theoretically you can go under the railroad and interstate to the Santa Cruz, but the path is too low and is covered with loose, deep sand.
I turned around and realized that not only would I return back uphill but there was a good breeze blowing against me. The River Park had emptied out considerably as people were getting out of the heat. It's still comfortable in the shade, where I am now, but it's getting hot in the sun. I think, now that I've hydrated and rested I'll go on to the mall and get really cool. I've gone through three refills of my water bottle, which is about 1.5 pints, and haven't had to pee. That's a lot of sweating.
It's evening now and I'm so glad to be in a cool apartment. I did some shopping on the way home and when it was nearly noon headed out to do some more shopping. It was so hot and I was already feeling wrung out from my long ride in the heat, but I wanted to pick up some orthotics that I've heard good things about. I'm looking for something I could use with sandals. When I wear my tennies with good insoles my feet are fine but when I wear sandals my feet hurt the next morning. So far I haven't found anything that didn't look stupid but these might be ok. I need good arch support, but I will not wear closed shoes all summer long.
